Security

Overview
BASOC brought together representatives from federal, state, and local law enforcement in order to assess and plan for the security needs and resources for the 2012 Olympic Games. The level of cooperation among the agencies, the thoroughness of the research and planning and the creative solutions developed demonstrate the high level of commitment these agencies have towards the success of the 2012 Olympic games in the San Francisco Bay Area. Interagency committees analyzed more than 10 specific aspects of Olympic security, including transportation, Olympic venues and Village, dignitary protection, private security, intelligence and anti-terrorism command and control.

Can all the different law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions work together on an event of this magnitude?
The California Law Enforcement Community has substantial experience in providing security for major international sporting events and has long-established guidelines that initiate protocols of mutual aid in such interagency events as natural disasters, civil disturbance and major crowd-control events.

The San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California enjoy a level of interagency cooperation that distinguishes them from other area in the United States. Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies will work together in a coordination and command center.

What is the security Coordination Center?
A large, secure facility where agency representatives from each law enforcement, security and public safety organization involved with the conduct of the 2012 Olympic Games will coordinate operations and responses to any incidents, threats or occurrences.

What about security at the venues?
There will be security command posts adjacent to every sports venue, celebration area, and housing venue. An innovative and unprecedented Security Academy will be instituted to train candidates from around the country in Olympic security operations.

Highlights

  • Security planning and operations will be consistent with usual public safety relationships and roles wherever possible, including the use of concepts in California's Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS).
  • Security practices and models that have proven successful in prior Olympic Games will be utilized.
  • Constant coordination between Olympic Games organizers and the security team will ensure optimum safety for athletes, dignitaries, media, guests and general public.
