How will the current system of healthcare provide for services during the Olympic Games?
The medical system in the San Francisco Bay Area is made up of a network of over 100 hospitals, medical groups, and health plans, representing over 53,000 licensed beds, and nine designated trauma centers, working in concert to provide cost-effective, quality care to all persons regardless of their ability to pay. The health services required by an event of the magnitude of the 2012 Olympic Games could be well managed by the breadth, strength and collective experience of the services that exist in the San Francisco Bay Area today.
How will the Olympic Games enhance the health care facilities in the region?
Developments and improvement in technology will continue to occur and the delivery of healthcare services in the San Francisco Bay Area will be enhanced through investment in equipment, technology and personnel.
What is the medical plan for the Games?
Given the vast amount of healthcare services and personnel available within the region, the clinical needs of the 2012 Olympic Games can be effectively managed with the current resources. BASOC will appoint an advisory Medical Support Group consisting of physicians, hospital administrators, emergency medical services coordinators, researchers, and providers. A chief Medical Officer and Medical Administrator will be appointed to coordinate all hospitals and supplies. A polyclinic and Sports Medicine Center will be established at each of the Olympic Centers at the Olympic Village. A Veterinary Medicine Center will be established at the equestrian venue. Spectator Medical stations will be located at each sports venue.
How will the testing procedures for athletes be handled?
Drug testing of athletes at the San Francisco Bay Area venues will take place at the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory in Los Angeles, one of the two IOC-approved doping laboratories in the United States.
