Media

Overview
Media. It is the window through which the entire world experiences the Olympic Games. From print and television to radio and the Internet, it is media that delivers the sights sounds and stories that encompass Olympic sport.

In 2012, the San Francisco Bay Area will create a crystal clear window that will shine with the spirit of the XXX Olympiad.

The Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) organized an advisory panel of highly respected media professionals that had previously worked at an Olympic Games. Their input led to the development of the San Francisco Bay Area's 2012 media plan.

What will the San Francisco Bay Area provide the media?
BASOC's commitment is to provide the best possible environment for the media with fast, state-of-the-art technology; professional, well-run facilities; convenient, reliable transportation; and comfortable convenient accommodations.

In short, BASOC is prepared to deliver the best-ever media experience in 2012.

Where will the media centers be located?
The International Broadcast Center (IBC) will be housed in twin hangars at Moffett Field. The hangars have been selected as the site of the IBC because of their central location, massive size and long-term availability. The hangars are also within walking distance of the Olympic Village. The IBC will be set up on a single level to facilitate mobility of people and equipment. The hangars, which are historic structures, will be renovated providing a lasting legacy to the community.

The Main Press Center (MPC) will be located in the San Mateo County Expo Center, in the middle of the San Francisco Peninsula. The center is within one minute of two major transportation arteries: US 101 and SR 92. The center neighbors the San Francisco International Airport and the Media Hotel Cluster. It is also a short distance-and equidistant- from the IBC, Olympic Stadium, and Media Village. The MPC will serve as a hub for media shuttles and is also adjacent to a Caltrain stop.

Where will the media be housed?
The primary media accommodations will be offered in San Mateo convenient to both the MPC and the IBC.

There will be a designated Media Hotel Cluster, surrounding the San Francisco International Airport. The media hotel cluster will offer more than 12,000 rooms at a range of hotels. Transportation will be convenient, as the Media Hotel Cluster will be served by a continuous shuttle loop.

Key Highlights

  • Both are in prime locations along main arterial highways and public transportation.
  • Ample time for planning, as the IBC's facility will be available for access well in advance of the Olympic Games.

  • Media sub-centers at every venue to meet the needs set forth for each sport.
  • Media accommodations that total more than 16,000 rooms.
  • · The development of personal communication devices (PCD), a wireless handheld computer that will deliver the nearly limitless supply of information.
  • Media credentials that double as scannable "smart cards," which will provide everything from venue access to the purchase of goods and services.
  • An integrated technology network, called My Olympic Games, that will integrate information services with the PCD and smart cards.
