Accommodations

Overview
The San Francisco Bay Are offers some of the finest accommodations in the world. Hospitality is part of San Francisco's heritage, beginning in the gold rush days of the 1800's and continuing today. Year after year, respected publications such as Conde¢ Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure and National Geographic Traveler heap accolades on San Francisco as the world's 'favorite city.'

The Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) brought together a diverse team of experts in the field of hospitality. These included the Directors of the San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and Sacramento Convention and Visitor's Bureaus, and members of the business community.

What accommodations will be provided?
The hotels in the San Francisco Bay Area are readily available to host the Olympic family, spectators and the media. They are abundant in number and of a superior quality. The entire Bay Area currently already offers enough rooms to be an outstanding host for the Olympic Games of 2012. BASOC has identified over 23,714 hotel rooms in the City of San Francisco close to sports venues, 13,859 hotel rooms in the County of San Mateo, 7,217 rooms in the Santa Clara area, 5,539 rooms in the City of San Jose, and another 9,000 rooms in the Sacramento area. As of 2001, an additional 10,000 hotel rooms are under construction in the Bay Area. Each of the sports International Federations will have a headquarters hotel within close proximity to their specific sport venue.

Where will the media be housed?
The media hotels have been identified as the cluster of hotels just south of the San Francisco airport in the county of San Mateo. There are over 14,000 rooms in that area. In addition, several college dormitory rooms will be available to those media representatives whose companies require a more cost-effective means for housing. The International Broadcast Center (IBC), which will be located at Moffett Field, and the Main Press Center (MPC), which will be located at the San Mateo County Expo Center, are in close proximity to the hotels designated for media guests for their ease of travel to and from venues.
