Tara VanDerveer became the third head women's varsity basketball coach at Stanford University on May 7, 1985. In 19 years of collegiate coaching, VanDerveer has accumulated a 458-121 (.791) record, led Stanford to five Final Four appearances, and two NCAA titles (1989-1990 & 1991-92). She is currently fourth by winning percentage among active Division I women's basketball coaches and her 458 victories is 17th among active coaches. During seven USA Basketball coaching assignments, VanDerveer has a remarkable 88-8 (.917) record and a Gold medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. In recognition of her achievements, VanDerveer has been named National Coach of the Year three times. Prior to her position at Stanford, VanDerveer led Ohio State to two postseason appearances.
VanDerveer was a starting guard for three years at Indiana University, graduating in 1975 with a degree in sociology. She was inducted to the Indiana University Hall of Fame in 1995.
