BASOC History

In December, 1986, San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein received a letter from the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) inviting the city to compete for the 1996 Olympic Games. This led to the creation of the San Francisco Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC), in 1987, with Supervisor Quentin L. Kopp leading the effort as Chairman. BASOC remained active after the 1996 Games were awarded to Atlanta.

Throughout the 1990s BASOC supported local youth and amateur sports programs and hosted international events including the 1992 World Figure Skating Championships and the 1994 men's and 1999 women's soccer World Cups.

We now are proposing to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
