P. Anthony (Tony) Ridder, 60, was named CEO in March 1995 and chairman a few months later. He had served as president of Knight Ridder since 1989. He joined the Knight Ridder corporate staff as president of the Newspaper Division in 1986. Ridder moved to the corporate post from his job as president and publisher of the San Jose Mercury News. He joined the Mercury News in 1964 and was serving as general manager when appointed publisher in 1977.
Ridder serves on the executive committees and boards of the Associated Press and the Newspaper Association of America. He serves on the board of Classified Ventures, a national company offering Internet sites on automobiles, real estate and apartments. He also serves on the advisory board of the Center for Economic Policy Research at Stanford University and is a founding member of the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose. He is a trustee of the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and of Santa Clara University.
A 1962 University of Michigan graduate, Tony holds a bachelor's of art degree in economics. Tony and his wife, Connie, a lawyer, have three daughters and a son.
