John F. Oppedahl, one of the newspaper industry's most respected publishers, was named publisher, chairman and CEO of the San Francisco Chronicle on Nov. 16, 2000.
In 1996, Oppedahl was promoter to publisher, president and CEO of Phoenix Newspapers, Inc., having spent 11 years there as both executive editor and publisher of The Arizona Republic and credited with building it into a powerful presence on the national level. Prior to joining the Republic, he was managing editor for news at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner from 1987-1989. From 1983-1987, Oppedahl worked for the Dallas Times Herald. Much of his career, 1968-1983, was spent at the Detroit Free Press in various positions. Oppedahl began his career in 1967 as a reporter at the San Francisco Examiner.
