In a single Olympics, Meyer powered her way into swimming history by becoming the first female to win three individual Gold medals. Meyer was 14 when she set her first world record. She then went on to hold five global records at the same time, smashing 20 world and 24 American records.
Winner of the 1968 Sullivan Award, Meyer was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1977, the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Women's International Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. She was also named swimmer of the year from 1967-69 by Swimming World magazine. A panel of sportscasters named her the greatest female swimmer of the 20th century.
Today, Meyer owns and manages the Debbie Meyer Swim School in Sacramento.
