Stanford University has won 37 National Team Championships since Dr. Ted Leland became Athletic Director in the fall of 1991, including a record six national titles in 1996-97. Stanford has won the Sears Directors' Cup Trophy, emblematic of the top athletic program in the nation each of the last six years. Leland, a former assistant coach at Stanford, is reponsible for a department that includes 33 intercollegiate varisty teams - 15 men's, 17 women's and one co-ed - plus the physical education department, intramurals, club sports, open recreation and the Stanford Golf Course.
During Leland's tenure, the Athletic Department has raised over $125 million in private donations, while its assets and endowments have grown from $62 million to $205 million during that span and $80 million of new or renovated athletic facilities have been completed.
Leland came to Stanford after three years as Athletic Director for the University of the Pacific. Leland graduated from the University of the Pacific and received a master's degree in physical education.. He received his doctorate in education/sports psychology from Stanford in 1982.
