Chronicle Staff Report
October 16, 2002 -- The Board of
Supervisors gave the mayor full authority
to sign the "host city agreement"
with the International Olympic Committee
if the Bay Area is picked as the site of
the 2012 Summer Games.
The action by the S.F. supervisors Tuesday
seems innocuous on its face, but to the
Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC),
which is behind the bid to bring the games
here, the unanimous vote was crucial.
"It's incredibly important,"
said Anne Cribbs, president of BASOC. "It
shows we have the support of our elected
officials and the community."
San Francisco is competing with New York
City to see which city will represent the
United States in the international competition
for host city of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The U.S. Olympic Committee will meet Nov.
2 to make its choice.
