Acclaimed Bay Area Artists Unveil First Four Original Works of New "The Bridge to the Future" Poster Series Celebrating San Francisco Bay Area's Bid for 2012 Olympic Games

Unique Twelve Poster Series Showcases Bay Area Creativity, Enthusiasm for 2012 Olympic Bid

May 8, 2002—San Francisco, CA: Joined by arts community leaders and BASOC officials, some of the Bay Area's most prominent designers today unveiled the first four in a new series of twelve original works that celebrate the San Francisco Bay Area's bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. "The Bridge to the Future" series of twelve unique posters by twelve acclaimed Bay Area artists and designers will showcase the Bay Area's internationally renowned creative community and demonstrate the broad enthusiasm for the bid among Bay Area residents from many backgrounds.

"Our bid for the 2012 Olympic Games builds a 'Bridge to the Future' for the people of the San Francisco Bay Area, the USOC and the international Olympic Movement," said Anne Cribbs, BASOC President & CEO and 1960 Olympian. "We're so proud that twelve of the Bay Area's best artists and designers have come together now to celebrate ur bid for the 2012 Olympic Games through twelve unique visions of 'The Bridge to the Future' theme."

Each original work expresses the individual designer's vision and interpretation of "The Bridge to the Future" – the recently announced theme of the San Francisco Bay Area's campaign to be selected U.S. Candidate for the 2012 Olympic Games by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) this November. The twelve artists and designers were invited to participate based on their national and international design credentials.

"The Olympic Games don't just attract the world's greatest athletes, they also attract the world's greatest artists and designers." said Rick Tharp, principal designer of Tharp Did It, Inc and BASOC's "design umpire," who coordinated "The Bridge to the Future" poster series. "We're fortunate that so many of them call the Bay Area home and we're incredibly grateful that so many have been inspired to contribute their artistic genius to our bid for the 2012 Olympic Games."

All twelve original posters reflect diverse styles, approaches and interpretations of 'The Bridge to the Future' theme. Michael Mabry of Emeryville, Jean Orlebeke of Oakland, Michael Schwab of Marin County and Michael Vanderbyl of San Francisco designed the first four posters unveiled. The next four posters in the series will be unveiled at the opening of the Golden Gate Games on May 31st. The final four original works will be unveiled at a special reception in late June.

Design, Production, Printing & Paper Generously Donated
All publication and production for the posters series has been generously contributed by httprint, a San Francisco-based total solutions technology and services provider focused on the printing sector (www.httprint.com). Paper for the posters was generously donated by Sappi, the world's leading producer of fine paper (www.sappi.com). Dome Printing of Sacramento, one of Northern California's largest and most technologically advanced printers, has contributed all printing for the project (www.domeprinting.com). George Hirthler and Rebecca D'atilio of Helikon developed and helped organize "the Bridge to the Future" poster program concept (www.helikon.com).

"The Bridge to the Future" Series Prints to be Distributed throughout the Bay Area
The posters will be distributed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to merchants, businesses and the general public throughout the months of May and June. A set of exclusive, limited edition prints (25" x 36") – including some signed by the artists -- will be available for purchase through BASOC or online at eBay. While supplies last, individual display posters of each print (18" x 27") will be available to the general public at select events or at BASOC offices on a first-come, first-served basis. Complete sets of the entire series will also be available for purchase from BASOC. Postcard prints of each poster will also be distributed in restaurants and cafes around the Bay Area.

Arts & Cultural Legacy Proposals Announced
BASOC officials also discussed the details of proposed arts and cultural legacy programs included in the 'Bid Addendum' recently submitted to the USOC. Developed in recent months by a working group of arts community leaders from throughout the Bay Area, the plans include allocating $26 million to stage the Cultural Olympiad, which would begin four years before the Olympic Games in 2009 and engage the region's creative community in the preparation for and celebration of the 2012 Olympic Games. In each of the four years leading up to 2012, the Organizing Committee would award twenty grants of $50,000 each to commission original works by local artists and musicians. BASOC also proposes that $10 million in surplus funds from the 2012 Olympic Games will endow a legacy foundation to benefit arts and cultural programs in the Bay Area after the Olympic Games.

"Along with Sport and the Environment, Culture is one of the three pillars of the Olympic Movement," said John Killacky, Executive Director of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Chair of BASOC's Arts & Culture Committee, which developed the arts and cultural component of the bid. "We're committed to supporting that pillar by engaging the Bay Area's arts and cultural community in our bid for the 2012 Olympic Games today."
