Poll Shows 84% of Bay Area Voters Support Efforts to Bring 2012 Olympic Games to San Francisco Bay Area

Survey of San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Contra Costa Counties Shows Strong Support for 2012 Bid Across the Board

June 20, 2001—San Francisco, CA: Eighty-four percent (84%) of registered voters in 5 Bay Area counties support the effort to bring the 2012 Olympic Games to the San Francisco Bay Area, according to a poll released in detail today by the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC). The survey of registered voters in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo and Contra Costa Counties shows strong support in all five counties for hosting the 2012 Olympic Games in the San Francisco Bay Area, including overwhelming support for the current bid effort and significant interest in attending and volunteering for the 2012 Olympic Games.

"The overwhelming support of residents for bringing the 2012 Olympic Games to the San Francisco Bay Area was dramatic and exceeded our expectations," said George Broder, President of George Broder Group, LLC and a member of the BASOC 2012 Executive Committee. "Bay Area voters are enthusiastic about hosting the world's finest athletes, the economic benefits that would accrue to the region and opportunities for participation and volunteerism that the Olympic Games will bring." Among the highlights of the survey:

  • 84% -- an overwhelming majority -- of Bay Area voters support the effort to bring the 2012 Olympic Games to the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • 79% of voters react "very positively" or "positively" to holding the 2012 Olympic Games in the region, citing the economic benefits, regional pride and opportunities for participation and voluntarism the Olympic Games would bring.
  • 78% of respondents said they or members of their household would attend the 2012 Olympic Games, if held in the Bay Area.
  • Over half – 51% -- of respondents said they would "definitely" or "possibly" become involved as volunteers for the Olympic Games.
  • 71% of Bay Area voters express "a great deal" or "some" interest in the Olympic Games overall.
  • Support for the bid to bring the 2012 Olympic Games to the region is strong in all five counties, with 80% of voters in Contra Costa County, 81% in San Francisco, 84% in Alameda and 88% of voters in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties supporting the bid.
  • Women and men give equally enthusiastic support to the effort to bring the 2012 Olympic Games to the Bay Area, with 83% of men and 85% of women in support of the bid.
  • Bay Area voters of all ages support the bid, with 85% of residents 40 years or older and 83% of residents under 40 years of age supporting a 2012 Bay Area Olympic Games

"With our natural beauty, mild climate, great venues and excellent conditions for athletes, Bay Area voters already know there's no better place in the world to host the 2012 Olympic Games than in the San Francisco Bay Area," said Broder.

The survey of 430 registered voters was conducted in October 2000 by the San Francisco-based polling firm Corey, Canapary & Galanis as part of the information submitted to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as part of the San Francisco Bay Area's bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 4.73 points.

In May, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced that its 2012 Bid Evaluation Task Force would visit the San Francisco Bay Area to tour proposed venues for the 2012 Olympic Games August 20 – 23rd of this year. The USOC will select the official 2012 U.S. Candidate City in Fall of 2002.
