Olympic Village

To design the Olympic Village for the 2012 Olympic Games, BASOC brought together a diverse team of experts, including EDAW, top local residential developers, representatives of the U.S. Green Building Council and other environmental designers, and prominent Olympians.

The goal of the team from its inception was to design a self-sustaining, high density urban village with consideration to the highest quality-of-life standards. This village would provide an ideal solution for the Olympic Games and, of equal importance, vitally needed housing for the region.

The design team discovered that the requirements for Olympic use and for post-Olympic use proved highly compatible and that the environmental components added positive dimensions to the living spaces.

Designed around a central core, the San Francisco Bay Area 2012 Olympic Village will offer extraordinary convenience for Olympic and future residents - services, dining, entertainment and transportation are never more than a five-minute walk from the front door. Future school buildings will serve as a Village Plaza.

This site is located within the sphere of influence of the city of Mountain View, ten minutes from the Olympic Stadium at Stanford and adjacent to major transportation arteries and a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority light rail station. This station provides connections to San Jose and the mid-San Francisco Peninsula and the other major public transportation systems. Moffet Field lies next to San Francisco Bay, assuring the presence of cooling breezes in summer and moderate temperatures year-round. This central location, at the heart of Silicon Valley, would be perfect for the Olympic Village and for post-Olympic use.

The Olympic Village designed for the 2012 Olympic Games in the San Francisco Bay Area embodies Olympic ideals and Olympic vision. It will serve as a living testament and contribution to the Olympic movement, as well as the movement toward better living in harmony with one another and the environment.
