Legacy Projects: Monterey Horse Park

Monterey Horse Park

The development of the Monterey Horse Park illustrates the concept of "win-win" to an extraordinary degree. BASOC's expert equestrian group, including representatives from all disciplines and two outstanding course designers, determined that locating an Olympic Equestrian competition at the former Fort Ord Army Base in Monterey County would be the best solution for the sport on several levels.

First, the land provides superb footing and varied terrain for endurance competitions in rolling coastal foothills. Second, the weather is excellent year-round, with moderate temperatures and cooling sea breezes in the summer months. Further, with fewer and fewer facilities available for eventing, establishing a world-class facility on the West Coast would provide an important legacy for the sport.

BASOC discovered that a community group in Monterey County had been trying for several years to develop an equestrian center at Fort Ord. By combining forces, the two groups have developed a compelling design and a prudent business plan, have begun establishing a non-profit foundation to develop the park, and have received enthusiastic support from the county government, which considers the equestrian park to be a fitting component for its land-use plans for the former Fort Ord.

The Monterey Horse Park will provide a 1000-acre facility with a 30,000-seat arena, using 4,000 permanent seats. The center will be set close to the Pacific Ocean in one of the most popular tourist regions in the world. It is designed with detailed consideration of all FEI criteria and with a careful eye to long-term success as a flexible, serviceable facility.

Ultimately, over 200 permanent and 600 additional stalls will be available. The outdoor arena will be constructed of grass terraces for enduring attractiveness and comfort. On-grade space will allow for adaptation for any scale of event. The indoor arena is also designed to serve the community as a center for activities and entertainment. The groom quarters for the Olympic Games will be established in the long-term equestrian campground, an area that will provide lasting and important benefits to all who use the facility. Finally, riders will be able to enjoy acres of open trails that will ultimately be the basis for the cross-country competition.

The Monterey Horse Park will be a win for the local equestrian community, Monterey County, regional and national equestrian enthusiasts and, ultimately, the 2012 Olympic Games.
