Billy Mills, Olympian

In one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history, Billy Mills won the 1964 10,000-meter run—the only American ever to capture that race. Predicting his time almost to the second, the Oglala Sioux set an Olympic record of 28:24.4 minutes.

A long distance runner for the University of Kansas, Mills was All-Big Eight in the 10,000 meters and cross-country.

In 1980, he founded the Billy Mills Leadership Institute to help Native Americans. Mills is an acclaimed inspirational speaker.
